Yunus’ personal gains using the Chief Adviser’s position

Nobel laureate and former Grameen Bank Managing Director Muhammad Yunus boosted his career and businesses and received local and international awards during different government tenures since 1976.

He took the help of Abul Maal Abdul Muhith to turn his Grameen Bank Project into a government-owned bank in 1983. In 1990, he revised the Bank’s law using his influence.

In 1996, he became an adviser to the first caretaker government of Bangladesh, and later he secured permission for Grameen Phone and funds for the Bank.

During the 2001-06 government of BNP-Jamaat-Hefazat, Yunus again secured benefits to launch new enterprises and suppressed the Bangladesh Bank’s audit report.

Yunus’ businesses experienced rapid growth after he and Grameen Bank won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.

Following the army’s capture of power on January 11, 2007, Yunus emerged as a key player in the depoliticization process, commonly referred to as the Minus-2 formula, which the US deep-state actors prescribed.

His bad fortune began after Sheikh Hasina came to power in 2009, and faced a number of legal actions until the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024.

Since taking oath on August 8, Yunus has recruited his close confidantes for the Advisory Council and other important positions of the Jamaat-controlled interim government.

For example, Yunus Centre Executive Director Lamiya Morshed has been appointed as the Chief Coordinator for SDGs at the Chief Adviser’s office, former Grameen Bank managing director Nurjahan Begum became the health adviser, former GrameenPhone director Salehuddin Ahmed is now the finance adviser to the interim government, while pro-Yunus activists Asif Nazrul, Farida Akhter, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, and Sharmeen Soneya Murshid were also made advisers, and Ahsan H Mansur was made governor of the Bangladesh Bank as a reward for standing by his side.

Moreover, former AFP bureau chief Shafiqul Alam, who campaigned for Dr Yunus for a long time, was made press secretary to the chief adviser, and nephew Apurba Jahangir was the deputy press secretary. Shabbir Ahmad, a senior program officer at Yunus Centre, became the assistant private secretary to the chief adviser.

Since August 8, Yunus has also secured huge benefits for himself and his companies through nepotism, irregularities, and corruption using his position without any obstruction.

2. Grameen Bank gets tax exemption for five years till 2029;

Meanwhile, Yunus is working to get Grameen Telecom and others to strike a deal with Starlink for satellite internet service and launch microcredit among the Rohingya community in Cox’s Bazar.

All the advisers, including the student representatives—Mahfuj Alam, Asif Ahmed—and retired adviser Nahid Islam, have also abused power to earn money illegally and increase support for the King’s party before the next general elections.
